15 Ways to Increase Laptop Battery Life by AmanAhad

Battery is the most vital part of a laptop. It is the component that makes laptop truly a portable device. Most of the laptops on an average give about 3 to 4 hours of backup on a single charge. But due to many reasons the actual time can be much less for some users. You can increase laptop battery life by using some simple methods . Following methods will make your laptop run longer on battery:

1. Adjust screen brightness

This is the single most important factor affecting battery life. Whether it is laptop, phone or tablet screens are major source of power drain. Lets face it, you don’t need maximum brightens all the time.  Adjust the screen brightness according to your requirements. When indoor lower your screen brightness to minimum comfortable level. The difference between minimum and maximum brightness can be as large as 1 hour of battery life.

2. Keep DVD drive empty

DVD drives consume lot of power every time CD/DVD spins in the drive. So don’t keep your drive filled all the time. This suggestion will raise on question:
Question: But what if I need to use some CD/DVD frequently ?
Solution: Just make an ISO image of your disk and copy it on your hard drive. You can then use it as a regular regular disk using
Virtual Drive software like DAEMON Tools Lite or Magic Disk

3. Disable WiFi

WiFi consume a significant amount of power. Disable WiFi when not needed. It’s significance can gauged from the fact that most notebooks have function keys dedicated to this purpose.

4. Disable Bluetooth

Nowadays bluetooth and Wifi come on a single chip to save power. Bluetooth consume very small amount of power. But if you want to save every last bit of power disable it.

5. Remove external device

External devices like portable DVD writers, hard drives, USB hubs, etc can be real power guzzlers. Disconnect any device as soon as its use is over.
Disk defragment

6. Defrag your hard drive regularly

Yes defragmenting hard drive can save some power. While this may not be obvious. Here is why: When your hard drive is fragment the data spreads over the hard drive
A single file may physically have its different parts at locations on the hard drive. To read this file the head of the hard drive has to move to different location. Thus consuming more power in the process.

7 .Close unused application or resource hogs

This is very simple method. You process, hard drive, graphics, etc all consume different amount of power at different load levels. The more you stress them the more power they will consume. Close any unused application or resource hogs. Sometimes using a  lighter alternative of an application may save power.

7. Replace HDD with an SSD

The SSDs are newer breed of storage device that do not have any moving parts like hard disk drives. The power consumption is significantly less. That is why most Ultrabooks have SSDs. Another advantage is performance. An SSDs are much faster than traditional spinning drive and can breath new life into your laptop. The remove hard drive can be converted to a portable drive using hard drive casing.

8. User Power Saver profile

Windows, Mac or Linux have built in profiles for battery mode. In Windows it is called “Power Saver”. Use it whenever on battery. You can also fine tune the power profile by going to advanced power settings. Though default profile is sufficient.

9. Add more RAM

The recommended amount of RAM  for Windows 7 32bit is 2GB and Windows 7 64bit is 4GB. When you have less than recommended RAM you will easily exceed this. Then pagefile will be used more often. As a result hard drive thrashing will occur and more power will be used. The amount of RAM required also depends on usage. If you are a heavy multitasker then adding more will help. Since RAM is pretty cheap these days it is highly recommended that you upgrade it.

1o. Regularly clean your laptop

Make sure the openings of the laptop are free of any obstruction. Otherwise the laptop will heat up and fans will be consumed. Over the time dust may accumulate in the exhaust vent. Get is cleaned from a any laptop service shop.

11. Keep it cool

If your laptop overheats get a laptop cooling pad to keep it cool. Make sure it is not USB powered otherwise it will itself consume power.
Another tip is not to keep your notebook on soft surfaces like bed, sofa or pillow. This closes the vents as well as act as an insulator for heat.

12. Mute sound

This point is obvious. But here it is for the sake of completeness. Speakers consume some power. If you don’t need sound just mute it.

13 .Keep your drivers and OS updated

Newer drivers not only give you better performance but also are more power efficient. Hardware manufacturers are continuously trying to decrease power consumption. Therefore a lot of time
For the same reason as above keep your OS updated. These updates will also protect against latest security exploits.

15-hibernation-sleep14. Use hibernation and sleep

When leaving your laptop for short duration put in on sleep. It will consume a very small amount of power but you can quickly revive it from sleep. If planning to take a longer break it is better to put it on hibernation. No power is consumed in hibernation mode. In both sleep and hibernation your work remains saved.

15 .Turn off aero ( Windows only)

Windows Aero is the transparency effect on windows borders. Some users have reported small to negligible saving in battery life by turning by off Aero. We recommend to test it yourself.

Conclusion

By following above methods you can easily increase laptop battery life. Some of these methods don’t cost anything. There is no reason not to use them. Methods like upgrading RAM will cost you but if battery life of you laptop is important to you then we recommend these methods
If this guide helped you or we have missed an important point then let us know in the comments below.

How to Create Windows 8 Bootable USB Drive by AmanAhad

If you want to install Windows 8 and don’t have a  DVD drive then don’t despair. Windows 8 can be installed from a USB drive. You just have to create a Windows 8 bootable USB drive. There are many ways to do it. You can even do it from command line without any software. But here I’m going to tell the easiest method that requires only a few clicks of mouse.
Note: This method works for both Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Step 1:

Download Windows 7 USB/DVD download tool and install it. This tool is designed for windows 7 but works well for Windows 8. For some reasons they have chosen a weird name for this tool. I always  forget the name of this tool.

Step 2:
Click Browse and select the Windows 8 ISO file.

Step 3:

    Click Next.

Step 4:
Click USB device and select your USB drive from the list. You will need at least 4GB or larger drive.

Step 5:

Finally click Begin copying and files will begin to copy. Now wait and relax till the files are copied. When it’s finished boot the computer from USB and start installation.

Note:

If you are running a 32-bit OS you can only make 32-bit bootable Windows 8 USB drive. 64-bit users can make both 32-bit and 64-bit bootable windows 8 USB drive.

Install Windows 8 without product key

Unlike windows 7, Windows 8 does not offer a 30 day trial and you have to enter product key at the time of installation. This can be problematic if you do not have key ready. You can bypass this while installation. But you have to enter the key later.
Step 1:
Create a file in notepad with the following content:
[EditionID]
Professional
[Channel]
Retail
[VL]
0
Step 2:
Save it as “ei.cfg” in sources folder of the USB drive created above. Make sure file name is inside double quotes while saving.

Additional tip:
If you wan’t the choice of version( Professional or Core) during setup use following “ei.cfg”

How to Speed Up a Slow Windows Computer for Free with picture by AmanAhad

Windows PCs typically slow down as applications are installed and used. Whether using word processing, spreadsheets, internet, games or anything else, hard drives fill with temporary files that do not always get removed when no longer needed. Usually conducting disk defrag, registry defrag and cleaning system junk and hidden errors in Windows registry with some powerful tool such as freeware such as Ccleaner toolbox, Wise Registry Cleaner or Wise Disk Cleaner or purchase something to clean up/speed up a slow computer. Read on to learn of ways to help keep a PC running smoothly with little or no money.

Steps

Stop all unused applications. The Task bar is on the bottom edge of the screen (unless relocated by the user). In the right side of the Task Bar appears a group of small icons, collectively named as the "system tray". Each of these icons represent a program that has been at least partially started or is running "in the background". Regardless of state, each causes a reduction of available memory and processing power, or resources. Closing, exiting or canceling any unused icon returns those resources to the system, and becomes available for use by the application(s) started specifically by the user. Go to your task manager and click on the Process tab. End all process that you can.

  • A utility called Process Explorer (procexp.exe) can be used to list all programs running on your Windows system. It is more comprehensive than the Task Manager, and hovering your mouse pointer over any program name will tell you what it is about.
  • A utility is built into Windows that can enable/disable task bar programs and processes from automatically loading with Windows. To access it, go to Start > Run > type in “MSCONFIG” and click OK. If you do not know what a process does, search its name. Do not disable processes if you are unsure, as some processes are necessary for your computer to function normally.

A useful freeware program called Game Booster by IObit (the same people who wrote the well regarded Advanced SystemCare software) will temporarily disable unnecessary background processes and boost performance on your computer when you are actively using only one program; such as a game program or video editing software. When you are finished, you can resume "normal mode" and all the background processes will be reloaded.
 2
Turn off unneeded Desktop Features that try to make things look better. The fancy rounded window corners, the way the menus fade in and out, and the 3-D button styles on modern Desktops all require some computing power and can overwhelm older machines. To turn off these appearance only enhancements: Windows XP - right click on My Computer, and choose the Properties option, then choose the Advanced tab, and click the Settings button under the Performance section. In the Performance Options dialogue that comes up, go to the Visual Effects tab, and choose "Adjust for best performance". You can also try the "Custom" option, and turn on and off individual settings to see which ones will work without slowing your machine down.

Vista - Click the Start button, then Control Panel, then choose System and Maintenance, then Performance Information and Tools. Click Adjust visual effects. If you are prompted for an administrator password or confirmation, type the password or provide confirmation. Click the Visual Effects tab, and choose "Adjust for best performance". You can also try the "Custom" option, and turn on and off individual settings to see which ones will work without slowing your machine down.
Windows 7 - Click the Start button, then Control Panel, and then System and Security. When you see System, click on it and then Advanced system settings. From here you can make sure you're on the Advanced tab and click on Settings under Performance. Here, you can also choose Adjust for best performance or choose Custom if you'd like to compromise between fancy visuals and performance. On a side note, this menu can be accessed much quicker by right-clicking on Computer, from either the Desktop or Start menu, selecting Properties, and then Advanced system settings.

3
Do a shut down/reboot also known as a cold reboot. Some programs do not release memory properly when they close, which is the case for some operating systems. Even doing a warm restart will not release some of the memory drivers and other core programs had allocated. The computer has to be completely shut down and then restarted. When a program is asking for some memory, a space would be allocated for it by the operating system (like Windows). This allocated memory can not be used by any other programs. "Well-behaved" programs typically let go of their hold of this memory space but some programs don't - this is known as a "memory leak", which is caused by a programming error. A memory leak is easily evident when a program uses up an abnormally high amount of resources because it keeps on asking for more and never gives back any of the allocated memory space. The user workaround is to terminate the program or process, but some processes and core processes can not be closed. Shutting down the system will have the operating system forget which memory locations aren't free, so on the next boot, all memory locations are free to use.
4
Empty the Recycle Bin. Simply deleting files from the disk doesn't really delete them at all, rather they are moved to a temporary holding area on the hard drive for easy restoration. This area is called the Recycle Bin and is usually displayed on the Desktop. Review the contents before emptying. Once emptied, the space on the hard drive that the data occupied is made available for reuse and the restoration of any files emptied from the recycle bin becomes extremely difficult. Note that this will only speed up your computer if the hard drive is nearly full.

Uninstall all applications that are no longer needed. When applications and games are installed to a Windows PC, some files are written in the Windows directory structure and dozens (or more) changes are made to the Windows Registry file. Most of these changes are not readily apparent to the user, so proper removal requires uninstalling the application through the Control Panel's "Add or Remove Program" or "Programs and Features" icon. There are 3rd party applications that can assist removing applications that do not have uninstall routines - or do not fully remove themselves. Revo Uninstaller Pro and CCleaner are two such popular uninstall applications. If the program is not listed in the Control Panel use the "uninstall" command provided by the application.

  • Simply deleting the entire application directory is not the same as uninstalling, as all the files written to the Windows directory and changes to the Windows Registry file will remain and may be reloaded when the system is rebooted.
  • Make sure that you do not uninstall any programs that are required by others. e.g. iTunes® will not work if Quicktime® is uninstalled, and many programs rely on other Microsoft programs.
 6
Run "Error Checking" on all hard drives. Right-click a drive icon in "My Computer" and select "Properties" followed by "Tools". Choose "Error Checking" to let the utility scan the drive for damaged files that can contribute to slow drive access speeds. This process may take several minutes or more to complete.

7
Run "De-fragment" on all hard drives. Right-click a drive icon in "My Computer" and select "Properties" followed by "Tools". Choose "De-fragment" to let the utility clean up fragmented files and consolidate free space on the drive. This should be done at least once per week, or more often if the PC is used heavily. Some versions of Windows allow for the scheduling of this utility, and in those cases could be set to run automatically without ever having to manually run again. This process may take anywhere from several minutes to an hour or more to complete depending on size of the drive(s) and amount of unused capacity or free space. Consider starting the defragment process so that it will run over night or prior to logging off. After completion the speed of hard drive read and write times may improve significantly. There are also stand-alone defragmenting programs available from other developers available for download that may or may not charge a fee for use. A very good example of a free defrag program that allows automatic and scheduled defragmenting is IOBit's Smart Defrag 2.

8
Install anti-virus software and keep it current. Today, anti-virus (AV) software is an absolute must. There are many from which to choose at the software store, but there are free AV solutions that do a very good job, too. Three popular free AV solutions are Avast!, AVG, and Avira AntiVir. All include regular "virus definition" file updates that allow the AV program to detect and protect from the latest virii being released. Note that while installing antivirus software actually slows down your computer, it does not slow it down as much as a virus does. Install an Ad Blocker; it not only prevents malware sites, but also reduces temp disk space for the browser by about 30% by not downloading advertising
9
Relocate the Swapfile or Virtual Memory file. These files (depending on Windows version installed) are hidden and are usually located on the Windows drive (usually "C:") If there is a second physical hard drive in the system, consider moving to the secondary drive. Ideally, these files work best when located on the fastest and largest (in terms of free space) drive in the system. The procedure for changing the location varies by version of Windows, and is not detailed here at this time as it is fairly advanced.

10
Find and Delete Temporary Files. Temporary Files are used for supporting some applications for a limited period of time and left unused for later. Go to "C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp" (Windows XP), "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Temp" (Windows Vista), or "%TEMP%" (any version of Windows) and delete all the files from this folder. If there is a problem deleting one or more files, skip those files and remove the rest. This will free a lot of space on the drive. The Temporary Internet Files directory can also be emptied

11
Be realistic. The "high end" computer purchased as new 5 years ago may run the latest version of Windows, but that doesn't mean that it will do it very well. Keep in mind that the Minimum System Requirements on the software box is indeed, minimum. The best experiences usually require that the system is configured to Recommended System or better, instead. Technology marches on and it seems there is a game of "one-up-man-ship" played between software developers and hardware designers. Regardless, eventually new software will require new hardware or vice-versa. It seems that the amount of frustration you can endure best determines how long you will run your current setup.

12
Set your computer's energy settings to High Performance. This is especially true in Laptops and Netbooks where the processor speed is altered in accordance to energy settings (and if you are running on battery power)

13
Clean Up Primary Partition. Click "Start" type "cleanmgr" and press "Enter" key. Select your primary partition ( Windows installed drive, in most cases C:/ drive) and scan it for junk files. After few seconds, it will show a list of unnecessary files and simply select all these check boxes and start cleaning your drive.

14
Download a Secure Computer Cleaner. Many programs can clean out your computer and delete Junk Files and fix Registry Errors. Some programs are AVG PC Tuneup, AVG QuickTune, CCleaner, RegClean Pro, SpeedyPC Pro, etc
15
Run a Speed Test. After finishing all the steps, it's good to know what speed you currently have. Take a Speed Test

Remote Control Your PC from Your BlackBerry Over WiFi or Bluetooth Using Vectir

Vectir
The app is a regular J2ME MIDP app that happens to support BlackBerrys allowing you to control quite a few of your PC’s functions from your BlackBerry. Vectir has been around for awhile with the last update in November of 2010 but this is the first I have heard of it.
Vectir has built in support for Winamp, Windows Media Player, iTunes and PowerPoint along with the ability to act as a keyboard, mouse, and volume control for your WinXP, Vista, or Windows 7 computer. It even has a remote desktop feature but I found it kind of laggy. The cool part is that each app has its own interface for controlling it.
The Vectir app has a nice 30 day trial after which you can pick up a copy of the app for $19.95. (currently $14.95 in a limited sale). It is confirmed to work on quite a few newer BlackBerrys over WiFi though the Bluetooth support list is slimmer.
Check out the free trial at www.vectir.com and let us know what you think!

How to Play Games in Your Mac Terminal

Terminal is an application inside all Macs. Not many people use it, because it's simply too complicated to use. But Terminal can do anything that you could do manually, and more! This article will show you how to play games on Terminal. This means you could play games without the need to download anything, even if wifi is broken!

Steps

  1. 1
Find Terminal. It's usually in your dock, but if it's not there you can search for it in Spotlight. Or go to Finder, type cmd-shift-G and write "/Applications/Utilities/Terminal.app".
  2. 2
Open Terminal. Then type "emacs", press return and hold esc+x. Now you can type the name of a game, hit Enter and play it in Terminal!

Method 1 of 6: Tetris

  1. 1
Type "Tetris" after following the instructions written before. A window should appear, and tetris blocks will start falling! Move them around with the left and right arrows, and turn them with the up and down arrows. Your score should be on the right of your playing area, together with Rows and Shapes.

Method 2 of 6: Snake

  1. 1
Type "Snake" after following the instructions written before. A window should appear, with a red snake moving! Control his movement with the up, left, right and down arrows, and try to collect the beads that appear on the screen!
    • The objective of Snake is to guide your snake around your screen, collecting beads that appear. The more you eat, the more your score rises, but you also get longer! Hitting the side of the screen, or hitting your tail, will kill you, and you will lose.

Method 3 of 6: Gomoku

  1. 1
Type "Gomoku" after following the instructions written before. A window should appear with a screen full of dots. Type y or n (y will let the computer start, n will let you start). Move your selector around with the up, left, right and down arrows and select with x. Gomoku is like Connect 4, only that you need 5 in a row to win.

Method 4 of 6: Pong

  1. 1
Type "Pong" after following the instructions written before. A window should appear with two bats on each side, and a red ball bouncing around. The bat on the left moves with the left and right arrows, while the one on the right with the up and down arrows. The score is under the playing screen.
    • The objective of pong is to send the ball into the opponent's area. The only defense they have is the bat, which is used to re-send the ball to you.

Method 5 of 6: Doctor

  1. 1
Type "Doctor" after following the instructions written before. Some text should appear saying "I am the psychotherapist. Please, describe your problems. Each time you are finished talking, type RET twice.". You are now conversing with your Mac's inner doctor!
    • Have fun with your doctor, but he will eventually get annoying.

Method 6 of 6: More Games

  1. 1
To see which games your computer has, go to Finder, hold cmd+shift+g, and type "/usr/share/emacs/22.1/lisp/play". To play them, follow instructions of before and type it's name.

Tips

  • To change from a game to another, type esc+x and write the name of the game you want to play, then click Enter.
  • There are more games in more updated versions of the Mac Operating System.

How to Blend Your Facebook Cover Image with Your Profile Picture

Today I'll (AmanAhad) show you how to Blend your facebook cover as a profile picture. Also it allows you to create your profile picture using part of the background of your cover image.
Here is an example of how I created this for one of my clients, Wayne’s Jerky:
blended facebook cover image
I could have simply made the Wayne’s Jerky profile photo a solid white square with their logo on top; but instead I used their circular logo in order to allow some of the grass from the cover image to show in the background.
The HyperArts blog article I linked to above also includes four additional examples for you to see how other Facebook pages have used this blended look. Make sure to read through their blog article comments at the bottom too, as there are other user-submitted examples that are impressive as well. Here are a few examples:
blended cover image 1

blended cover image 3

blended cover image 2

blended cover image 4

You may wonder why you can’t simply use the template I provided in my last blog article. The reason for this is due to Facebook displaying a smaller size of your profile picture than what you upload. Facebook requires that you upload a profile picture 180×180 pixels (or larger); but your profile picture only displays at a size of 125×125 pixels 160×160 pixels (increased size as of April 26, 2012; with an additional 5 pixel-wide border) on top of your cover image. Conversely, when you upload your cover image at the correct size of 851×315 pixels, it displays correctly at that size. The HyperArts template is setup to allow for this varying size of your profile picture, so that the background peaking through in your profile image is the same resolution/size as your cover image.
Follow their instructions on how to crop and resize your profile picture and cover image using their template. But here are a few things to note:
  1. Make sure your profile image is clear when it’s shrunk to 32×32 pixels, since this is the size your profile image will appear at throughout your Facebook page (for example, next to any status updates you post).
  2. Your cover photo should be uploaded at a size of 851×315 pixels (which is the same size it will be displayed on your Facebook page).
  3. Your profile image should be uploaded at a size of 180×180 pixels (but it will be displayed as 160×160 pixels on your Facebook page).
After you upload your new cover photo and profile image, your timeline will show this as a status update. You may want to “Highlight” that status update (by clicking on the star in the upper right hand corver of the status update) so that it shows up larger in your timeline. For example, here is how it looks in your timeline before you Highlight it (shown at 70% size):
facebook cover status
And here is how it looks after you highlight it (shown at 70% size):
facebook cover status highlight

Do you have a creative cover image and profile picture on your Facebook page? Share the link to your Facebook page in the comments below. I’m working on a new blog post with examples of Facebook page cover images; if yours is creative, unique or effective… I just might include it in the post!
